Minimum Wage

Minimum wage is the lowest hourly amount an employer can legally pay an employee. The United States introduced a federal minimum wage of $0.25 in 1938. This number rose periodically throughout the rest of the century and into the twenty-first century. It had reached $7.25 by 2009.

The federal minimum wage became a mainstream news issue in the 2010s. At this time, many Americans working for hourly pay at large employers such as McDonald’s and Walmart began calling for the minimum wage to be raised to $15 in an activist movement known as the Fight for $15. In the 2016 presidential election, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders (1941–) made raising the national minimum wage to $15 a major platform of his campaign.
