Welcome to English 9H! I am so excited for the upcoming year, and you should be, too! The English 9H curriculum contains a variety of wonderful texts, including critical classics (The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet) and thought provoking modern novels (Fahrenheit 451), to name just a few.
In order to prepare for your first year of Honors English, you are going to read TWO books over the summer—one of your own choosing, and one assigned title. Then, when we return to school in the fall, you will write an essay that highlights your deeper understanding of your reading. |
READING ASSIGNMENT:
Students entering English 9H will read both one book of their choice and The Pearl by John Steinbeck. A story of classic simplicity, The Pearl is based on a Mexican folktale. It explores the secrets of human nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love—three subjects that we will further examine throughout the year.
After reading your choice book and The Pearl, you will complete the 9H SUMMER READING JOURNALS assignment (links below) and be ready to use it during our first class in September.
Feel free to either purchase The Pearl on your own, grab a copy from the school or town libraries, or pick up a copy from Ms. Chiarello in HS Room 206. If you have any questions during the summer, email me at [email protected], and I will reply as soon as I can!
**Please note that successful completion of the summer reading program is a final requirement for placement in the Honors course.
Enjoy your summer. I’ll see you in the fall—it’s going to be a great year!
