Children of Undocumented ImmigrantsPerhaps the most enduring barometer of the national attitude toward citizenship for undocumented children is the ongoing introduction of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act to Congress. Since 2001, versions of the bill have been debated on the House and Senate floor. The act proposes to offer temporary residency to children who are in the United States illegally but who choose to complete either two years of military service or two years of higher education. Supporters and detractors have been active both in Congress and in the public sphere every time DREAM Act legislation arises.
