Freedom of Speech

Controversy has surrounded freedom of speech on American college campuses, which have been at the forefront of First Amendment issues since the 1960s, when civil rights and antiwar activists launched the Free Speech Movement to protest campus bans on student political activity. In the twenty-first century, however, conservative critics claim that attitudes on liberal college campuses have seemingly shifted away from supporting First Amendment rights and encouraging open political discourse. Instead, they argue that college students have increasingly engaged in viewpoint discrimination, which involves preventing others from speaking when their message is considered offensive.
