Apartheid, South Africa
Apartheid is a South African (Afrikaans) word that means separateness (from the Dutch apart and heid—meaning hood—thus, aparthood). It is the name given to the policy of racial segregation and sanctioned discrimination against nonwhites (Africans, "coloreds," and Asians) in South Africa, and it is often used today to describe other forms of legalized racial segregation, both past and present.
